If you aren’t sure you are right, are you? (008)

In this episode of Blogging for Programmers, I discuss the critical importance of ensuring that the information shared in programming blogs is accurate and credible. A big emphasis on the need for programmers to verify concepts is involved, not to mention the consequences of spreading misinformation (even when you don’t think you are!) A big think to be really careful of is the distinction between opinions and facts in tech writing, always being clear about what is subjective and what is objective.

KeyPoints

  • Ensure the things you believe are true are actually true.
  • SQL is a declarative language, not imperative.
  • Stating false facts can lead to loss of credibility.
  • Always verify your facts before sharing them.
  • If you’re unsure, look it up before writing.
  • Code should be tested before being shared.
  • Be cautious with statements that have exceptions.
  • Opinions should be clearly stated as such.
  • Facts should be testable and without exceptions.
  • It’s important to admit when you’re wrong.
