In this episode of Blogging for Programmers, I will continue in my discussion on essential tips for programmers looking to start a blog. The episode emphasizes the importance of obtaining permission from employers before blogging, as companies may own the rights to work produced during employment. Even if this is rather unlikely, it is better to find out before you get you blog rolling and learn that you have to take it down.
Beyond permissions, I will discuss the need for discretion when sharing personal anecdotes and highlight the need for caution when discussing anything that could conceivably be proprietary information. Being diligent and a bit careful will help blogging (and other community activities) be seen as positives to your employer, both current and future.
Key Points
- Write the blog you want to write.
- You may need permission to start and maintain a blog.

- Be cautious about sharing proprietary information.
- Avoid referencing specific company projects in your blog.
- Tell a story, but keep it generic enough to not put out proprietary content or personal information.
- Due diligence is essential when blogging.
