For this Walt Disney World-loving person, SQL Saturday Orlando has always been a natural fit (especially since it is always held in early October, which coincidentally is during the time when Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is held (guess what my Scenic Route entry will be next week?).
The event is currently run by Doug Leal and has been in the past by Andy Warren (I think he is still involved) and even if it wasn’t near my favorite vacation spot I would still be just as excited to be there, see Doug, Andy, and all the volunteers and speakers that will be there.
My Session
This session is one that I have enjoyed doing a few times this past year, and I am looking forward to doing it again this year.
It started out as an idea for a lightning talk, but it was expanded, and I think it is a fun discussion session. When I was building it, I never thought I would be back building data warehouses again, but it is what I am getting back into now!
BI versus Relational Design
In relational database design, the main objective is to mirror the database structure as outlined in the requirements to ensure data integrity. While this approach may sometimes be challenging for users of the database, the difficulty should primarily indicate the complexity of business needs rather than flaws in the design. Conversely, whereas BI designs must also adhere to the requirements, usability is especially important in your designs. Small design errors can result in analytic mistakes that have huge business implications, even when the data is technically correct. In this lightning talk, I will highlight a significant mistake I made in my initial large star schema project that haunted me for years.
See you there?
Would love to see you at the conference on Saturday (or at the Halloween party at the Magi Kingdom Sunday Night!) Let me know if you will be around and we can talk about Database Design or Disney, I can talk about either for hours.
